Program Requirements
The SPA Leadership Program is a four-year
certificate program of coursework, seminars, community service projects,
and other team-building activities.
Each course builds on the experiences of the previous year. Topics covered include theories of leadership, management techniques, famous leaders, ethics, negotiation, conflict resolution, public speaking, teamwork, social justice, community service, resume writing and interviewing techniques.
The Leadership Program maintains very high standards and admission is competitive. Selection criteria include academic ability, a demonstrated commitment to public service, a letter of recommendation, and compelling essays. The program accepts the top 35 freshmen applicants who exemplify these criteria. Once admitted, students are encouraged and expected to be active participants not only within the program but throughout the campus community as well.

After completing 15 credits (GPA at least 3.0 in program courses), students
are eleglible to receive the Certificate In Advanced Leadership
Studies stating they have completed the American University
School of Public Affairs Leadership Program.
